Winter Storm Preparedness
A storm is one thing, a winter storm, that’s another topic altogether. Whenever it’s wintertime, I see to it that myself and the entire homestead is prepared. You never know when a winter storm may hit, so better ready than sorry right?

Winter Storm Safety Tips
Before
1. Gather Supplies
- Several days supply of water (1 gallon per person per day)
- Non-perishable food
- Medication
- Flashlight
- Batteries
- NOAA weather radio
- Fire extinguisher
- Rock salt
- Snow shovel or snow removal equipment
2. Winterize Your Home
- Protect and insulate your home with storm windows.
- Check that your gutters are clear of leaves and debris to prevent flooding or ice dams.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed and working.
- Check heating fuel levels, and make sure that your heating equipment and chimney have been inspected. (This should be done annually.)
3. Prepare Your Vehicle
- Keep the gas tank full and check the antifreeze level. You should also have an emergency kit stocked with essential supplies such as a flashlight, water, snacks, extra hat, socks, gloves, first aid kit, rock salt, flares, shovel, and tire chains.
- Move the car.

Stay informed of weather changes and travel only if necessary.
2. Power Outage
- If you own a generator, remember to practice generator safety. NEVER use generators in homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, or other enclosed or partially enclosed areas (even with ventilation.)
- If using candles, do not leave them unattended.

1. Exercise Caution
- Be aware of the conditions around you and exercise caution.
- Icy surfaces can be a problem whether you’re walking or driving.
- When performing physical tasks such as shoveling, it might help to warm up first. Work steadily and be aware of what you can physically handle, to make sure you do not overexert yourself.
- Do not continue with physical activity if you experience dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or shortness of breath.
2. Stay Warm
- Protect yourself from hypothermia and frostbite by dressing in warm layers and keeping exposed areas covered.
Winter Weather “Watch” Vs “Warning”
According to the National Weather Service, a weather “watch” is issued when a weather event (like wind chill, a blizzard, or storm) is likely to occur within 24 to 72 hours.
Those in the watch area should prepare for these weather events and be alert about weather developments. A “warning” indicates hazardous weather is likely to occur within 24 hours and could pose a threat to people and property.
People are generally advised to stay home or exercise extreme caution if leaving.
How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing
To prevent your pipes from freezing, leave the water taps slightly open and keep sink doors open to allow warm air to circulate. In case of burst pipes, know where your water shut-off valve is and how to turn it off.
Pets
- As the temperature drops, make sure to bring your pets indoors or in a warm sheltered area.
- They should have easy access to water and food.
