Homesteading Supplies Every Homesteader Should Have On Hand

Homesteading is the self-sufficient lifestyle in which people grow their own food, and have livestock. Read on to find out more about essential pantry items for homesteaders!

There are essential items for all homesteaders to have on hand to make life easier. Self-sufficiency requires repairing things, growing your own good, making your own food, etc. We’ve already covered the essential tools that homesteaders should have, so here is a list of pantry supplies that homesteaders should have!

Flour

Flour is one of the most important supplies in your pantry. Flour can be used for bread making, baking, and cooking. But flour can be used for other things too! It can be used to repel ants, shine stainless steel, make glue, and even cure acne!

Baking Soda

As the name suggests, baking soda is essential for baking, and it is widely used in cooking as well. You can use baking soda to make mouthwash, deodorant, polish silverware, clean the kitchen, and remove the stubborn stains from your carpets!

Potatoes

Potatoes are great for eating! You can fry them, boil them, mash them, and no matter how you cook potatoes, they are always delicious. This easy to grow vegetable can also be used as a hot/cold compress, it can relieve headaches, relieve burns, and even clean your windows!

Vinegar

There are different types of vinegar, and they are all very beneficial for your health! Vinegar is widely used in cooking, but it is the most important ingredient to make pickles! Other than making pickles vinegar can be used in salad dressings, pan sauce, you can also create beauty products, and bug repellent.

Chicken

Chickens are great for every homesteader! They provide eggs that are essential for every pantry and the chickens can be eaten for their meat as well.

Lemons

Lemons are great to have in the house. You can use them while cooking, making pickles, or drinks. But they can also be used in the garden for protection against squirrels to keep them from digging the ground. Lemons can be used in cleaning the kitchen and bathroom, and they also get rid of the odor.

Seeds

Seeds are essential when it comes to gardening. But there are different uses for seeds. They can be used to feed small livestock animals such as chickens, geese, ducks, etc., and they can be consumed as they are.

Mason Jars

Mason jars are very useful to have laying around the house! They are perfect for storing food, making pickles, or making jams!

Cornstarch

Cornstarch is essential for baking and cooking, but it can also be used in the making of deodorant, it can remove blood stains, treat bug bites, and relieve skin irritation!

Yeast

Yeast is used to make bread, as everybody knows. But it’s also used in the making of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, probiotics and fermented foods.

Dried Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices are great for cooking and baking. Here are some dried herbs and spices that are essential for every pantry;

  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Parsley
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Chives
  • Cinnamon
  • Black pepper
  • Sumac
  • Chili Powder
  • Cumin
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger

Milk

Milk is one of the most used ingredients in the kitchen. You can make cheese, yogurt, cream, sour cream, ice cream, butter, and it can also be used for cooking and baking.
