Delicious Apple Cider Recipe | Taste the Festivities

Want to have delicious apple cider on hand? Why not make your own? Check out this post and see how you can make your very own apple cider that’s perfect during those cold days and nights ahead.

When autumn rolls around and the air gets a little chilly and crisp and the leaves start to fall, I really love coming home to make homemade apple cider. I know you can buy it pre-made from the supermarket, but why would you want to do that? Especially when you can go out and pick local farm fresh apples and make this easy-to-follow recipe from scratch?

Drinking fresh and delicious apple cider is a great way to warm up after a long day of raking autumn leaves. As homesteaders, we all know how much better homemade cider (and really, everything!) is than the store bought alternative.

The crisp, tangy smell of homemade apple cider really makes it a must-make during the fall season. So, today I’m going to show you how to make your own apple cider that will warm your heart and soul. This is definitely cheaper and infinitely more refreshing. Best treat of the season!

Ingredients:

  • 12 apples, sliced (use a variety of gala, granny smith and red delicious)
  • 1-2 large oranges, peeled and quartered (optional)
  • 1 lemon, peeled (optional)
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-4 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • brown sugar and white sugar, to sweeten

Special Equipment:

  • Slow cooker
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Potato Masher
  • Chopping knife
  • Cutting board

Directions:

Step 1: Wash and Cut the Fruits

Wash and Cut the Fruits

Wash apples, lemon and oranges and chop into slices. Place them in the slow cooker. Add the cinnamon sticks and whole cloves for some holiday flair. Fill slow cooker with water.

Step 2: Simmer

Simmer

Cover and simmer for at least 4 hours or until apples are very soft.

Step 3: Mash Up

Mash Up

Mash up all the ingredients using a potato masher. Cover and cook for another hour.

Step 4: Strain

Strain

Strain mixture several times into a pitcher using a fine mesh strainer until smooth.

Step 5: Stir

Stir

Stir in vanilla extract. Add brown sugar and white sugar to reach desired sweetness.

Step 6: Serve

Serve the cider warm or cold. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick and chopped apples. Leftover cider keeps well in the refrigerator.
