Easy and Delicious Sourdough Banana Bread for Your Homestead

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup of plain flour
  • A cup of mashed bananas
  • A cup of sourdough starter
  • One cup of sugar
  • One cup of nuts (walnuts, almonds, or pine nuts)
  • A teaspoon of baking powder
  • One teaspoon of baking soda
  • One teaspoon of salt (may either be course or table salt)
  • Two tablespoons of butter
  • Two tablespoons of brown sugar
  • Three Eggs
  • Two cups  of all-purpose flour
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon of vanilla or cinnamon
  • Optional: cream cheese and herbs

  • Three mixing bowls
  • One baking pan
  • Electric mixer

Step 1: Mix the Shortening, Sugar, and Bananas in a Bowl


To start, using your electric mixer, combine the ½ cup of shortening, sugar, and mashed bananas in a bowl. Do not stop until the consistency of your mixture is already creamy. You may also want to add more slices of bananas for a stronger taste and aroma.

Step 2: Add Sourdough Starter, Eggs Into the Mix


Then, add a whole cup of sourdough starter into the mix, followed by two eggs. Mix them until they are completely absorbed.

Step 3: Sift the Flour, Baking Soda, Baking Powder and Salt Into the Sourdough Banana Bread Mixture


Then, using a strainer or a fine-mesh sieve, sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into the bread mixture.

Tip: Sifting flour and the other baking ingredients will make them easier to mix evenly.

Step 4: Mix the Nuts Into the Bread Mixture


Next, add the cup of nuts. Walnuts, almonds, or pine nuts are usually the most favorite options of homesteaders like you when it comes to baking sourdough banana bread.

Skip this step if you don’t like nuts or if you are allergic to them. Add cream cheese or other herbs like parsley or rosemary instead.

Step 5: Prepare the Sourdough Banana Bread Topping


Next, combine the butter, flour, brown sugar, and vanilla in a small bowl. If you want, you may also add a pinch of vanilla or cinnamon for a sweeter taste and aroma. You may also add a cup of cream cheese to make a simple bread frosting.

Step 6: Time to Bake!


Transfer the bread mixture into the baking pan and spread it evenly. Then, pop it in the oven for 75 minutes at 350 Degrees Fahrenheit (Equivalent to around 200 Degrees Celsius).

Other homesteaders say that they prefer putting half of the bread batter first in the oven until it cooks. And then, they add the other half of the batter as another layer. While this tip can help you avoid the bread from toasting too much, you may just opt to bake the entire batter. Check your bread from time to time and observe it carefully to prevent any burns.

Step 7: Serve Your Fresh-Out-of-the-Oven Sourdough Banana Bread

Your sourdough banana bread smells divine, isn’t it? Pair it with a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy!

Reminder: let the bread rest for around five minutes. Then, create slightly thick slices, so the bread won’t cool down easily.
