7 Cinco de Mayo Decorations for Coronavirus-Proof, At-Home Fiestas
1. Colorful Fiesta-Inspired Napkin Rings
Napkins rings are some of Mexico's oldest crafts. In fact, these colorful decorations are a staple at any traditional Mexican table setting.
What You Need:
- Colored paper (preferably red, orange, white, pink, and other bright colors)
- Toilet paper cores
- Scissors
- Glue
Instructions:
- Cut three-inch-wide strips of colored paper.
- Fold them in half then leave one-inch lengthwise cuts on the bottom edges of the paper strips. Unfold and they should look like a Mexican ruffle dress.
- Afterward, slice the toilet paper cores in half. Set aside.
- Take one sliced core and glue the sliced colored paper on it. Make sure to alternate between the different available colors.
- Repeat with the remaining toilet cores.
2. Cocktail Mexican Paper Fans
Ditch the overused paper umbrellas for these cute, dainty cocktail Mexican paper fans! Pair them well with colorful cocktail recipes for a vibrant drink bar.
What You Need:
- Colored paper
- Scissors
- .125 hole puncher
- Wooden skewers (as thin as toothpicks)
Instructions:
- Cut 9 x 2-inch strips of colored paper.
- Get one strip, fold it into an accordion, and then make one of its ends curved by cutting the edges.
- Cut four to five holes starting from the straight-edged bottom.
- Insert the wooden skewer in the bottom hole, expand the paper a bit to look like a fan, and then glue it properly.
- Use the glue sparingly. Otherwise, it might drip down the skewer.

3. Mini Paper Flowers

What You Need:
- Colored paper
- Serrated scissors
- Hot glue
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Cut small serrated circles using your serrated scissors.
- Glue about four to five of them together. They'll serve as the base of your flower so they have to be sturdy.
- Next, ruffle up different colors of colored paper and then glue them on top of the serrated base. This will be the bud.
4. Colorful Egg Maracas
Don't throw away your Easter eggs just yet! These delightful, colorful plastic eggs will be the key ingredient to a fun Cinco de Mayo craft you and your kids can try.
What You Need:
- Plastic spoons
- Easter eggs
- White tape
- Colored markers
- Popcorn kernel
Instructions:
- Fill the Easter eggs with popcorn kernel.
- Take two plastic spoons and tape them on two sides of one Easter egg.
- Once the spoons are fixed in position, wrap the entirety with white tape.
- Decorate the body of the egg with the colored markers.

5. Cup Sombreros
These cute little cup sombreros just scream Cinco de Mayo. You can scatter them around the house or attach them to strings then hang them on cabinets, shelves, and ceilings.
What You Need:
- Styrofoam cups
- Small paper plates
- Red, tan, and green acrylic paint
- Cotton balls
- Hot glue gun
- Red and black colored paper
Instructions:
- Color the styrofoam cups tan. Set aside to dry.
- Meanwhile, dip the cotton balls in the red and green acrylic paint then set aside to dry as well. Make sure you leave some plain ones.
- Once the cups are dry, glue strips of red and black colored paper near the rim.
- Then, glue the cups to the paper plates.
- Finally, glue the dried cotton balls on the brim of the sombreros. Alternate between the available colors.
6. DIY Mexican Fiesta Masks
Can't go outside to buy Mexican masks? Just make your own then. Let your imagination run wild when creating the designs, the sky's the limit!
What You Need:
- Paper plate
- Pencil
- Colored markers
- Scissors
- Colored paper
- Rubber bands
- Hole puncher
Instructions:
- Sketch a mask design on the paper plates then cut it out using the scissors.
- Design the mask however you want using the colored markers. You can add strips of colored paper onto them a more festive look.
- When you're done, punch holes on the sides of the mask. They should be just under the holes for the eyes.
- Tie the rubber bands inside the holes and you're good to go.
7. DIY Piñata
No Mexican party would be complete without a piñata. It's one of the most popular DIY fiesta decorations associated with the holiday. Everyone loves the prizes inside them!
What You Need:
- Crepe paper
- Shoebox
- Glue
- Scissors
- Candy (for the prizes)
Instructions:
- Fill the shoebox with the prizes.
- Cut multiple strips of colored paper. Make sure they're proportional to the size of the shoe box.
- Make three-inch lengthwise cuts on the bottom edge of each strip to make them look like a Mexican ruffle dress.
- Glue the colored paper on the shoebox.
Remember: The essence of Cinco de Mayo isn’t to partake in festivals and parades, but rather to appreciate the cultural significance of the holiday.
