Do It Yourself Artisan Hot Cocoa Kit

If you’re looking for an excellent holiday gift for friends or a fun project for the kids, why don’t you try to make hot chocolate into a kit? I tell you, your loved ones will love this it.

This hot cocoa jar is perfect for the uber-chilly weather. It’s an awesome holiday DIY — easy to do and fun for everyone!

The holiday season is the best time to warm up to a sweet cup of hot cocoa. Having the same old plain chocolate drink every year, though, can start to taste ordinary.

I came up with this homemade hot chocolate kit for everyone. This is one of my family’s favorites. This can become your family’s favorite holiday drink, too.

Use this gourmet kit to brew up artisan hot cocoa in a matter of minutes! Subtle notes of mezcal, chipotle, and hazelnut make for an incredibly decadent marriage of sweet and spicy flavors.

It makes a great gift for friends, family, or that special someone. Of course, you can treat yourself to this quintessential holiday treat.

What is Mezcal? It can refer to an agave plant or a distilled drink that comes from any agave plant.

Hot Chocolate Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of cocoa
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 3 cups of powdered milk
  • 1/4 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cups of marshmallows
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Glass jar with lid

Wake up to a hearty meal that’s both filling AND healthy! https://t.co/MxmAzOkeZ2 pic.twitter.com/XS0aW5Kbpe

Step 1: Measure All Ingredients

The first step on how to make hot chocolate is to measure all your ingredients. Then you place them into separate bowls. That way, you can have all your ingredients in front of you while you fill your jar.

Step 2: Start Pouring

Starting with your powdered ingredients first, start filling your container. Continue pouring, layering the ingredients in your container. Add the cocoa to the jar. After you added all your powdered ingredients, add a layer of chocolate chips.

Lastly, place a layer of marshmallows. Your jar is ready to close, decorate, and label.

Step 3: Decorate and Label

Close the lid of your glass jar. You can now choose to decorate it any way you wish. It can be ribbon, tissue paper, or whatever you like.

Next, take your label and write down your ingredients and how to make hot chocolate step by step. Don’t forget to tie it around your jar. Perfect!

This may be a silly question, but I’ve you have the hot chocolate mix made, how do you make the hot chocolate? How much liquid do you add to make it? Are there cooking directions anywhere on this site?

I like to make it “to taste”. I prefer a lot more mix than my husband does and add water or mix until it tastes right. Usually I prefer a couple heaping tablespoons full whereas my counterpart prefers one heaping spoonful. Use hot water as liquid or hot milk if you prefer a creamier taste. Hope that helps!

I really like this idea of cocoa in a jar. I have a question though. How would you tell someone to fix their cocoa? I’m assuming warm milk is to be added to the mixture but how much per jar does this make? I’m probably overlooking this detail but I just can’t seem to spot it on the page. Thanks.

Actually, because of the powdered milk you can just use hot water. I’ve found that the amount you use is taste preference based. I like a generous couple of spoonfuls, but my husband is content with one heaping tablespoon full. It’s really up to you! Also, if you like a creamier version, you can use hot milk as your liquid. Hope this helps!

I actually love this recipe, so easy to make but we keep the marshmallows out until it’s drink time. I tried it with water-not very creamy and also made it with whole milk (so good & nice creamy).I use 3 heaping tablespoons of mix and about 12 oz. liquid and add marshmallows. The marshmallows get super hard when it’s with the mixture.

The layered contents in the jar look very appealing and makes a great gift. However, do you mix all ingredients together to get the right ratio per tablespoon? Enjoy your show!

Yes, Trudy. The layers look beautiful when giving it as a gift, but for use it must be mixed well. Thanks for your comment!

Hello! I absolutely adore this gift idea. I do have a few questions: 1. I want to make this in a 12 oz mason jar. What measurements should I use for my ingredients? 2. I don’t want to use powdered milk in the recipe. My family mixes their hot chocolate with warm milk so how much milk should I say to set aside? 3. I was thinking that the ingredients in the 12.oz jar would make one mug serving? Any suggestions? Thanks!

These jars fit 1/3 of the recipe (I just included a link above). These were given as gifts, so if you wish to fit the whole recipe in one container, you will need a jar that is about this size.

The 2 links for the Amazon mason jars are going to the same size 🙁
Can you give the oz in numbers for the two. The full size recipe jar and the gift size.
    Thank you

Looks very nice and would make a great gift, however this was not thought out in my opinion. It lacks on how big of jar is needed in ounces, how much liquid, be it water or milk or other will be used. You said to taste, but your tongue is not the same as my tongue, or my lady friends tongue. The jar will be dry, by the time the proper ratio is discovered. You need a starting point. I have found that 3 heaping tablespoons of mix and 12oz of liquid is a real good place to start, don’t forget the marshmallows. (the icing). Just a plain mason jar w/twist lid and some imagination, cool gift!! Short message on jar would include SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE. Thanks for your time. Brian
