Gear and Clothing

Don’t overdress. Sweat can make your clothing damp. Pack a backpack with the following:

  • Extra insulating layer: Down sweater or jackets.
  • Full size space blanket.
  • Portable stove with fuel canister to melt snow or heat liquid.
  • Metal cup you can put on the stove.
  • Dermatone for your nose, lips and earlobes keeps moisture from penetrating skin and prevents sunburns, while keeping extremities warmer.
  • A battery pack, like those sold by goal zero, to recharge your phone. Nothing drains a battery like cold weather.
  • Keep warm with extra gloves, socks, CHEMICAL hand/toe warmer packets.

Diet And Hydration

You need to stay HYDRATED in the winter as much as you do in the summer. You body does not stay as warm when insufficiently hydrated. If you go all day or night without urinating, that’s not a good sign.

Bring sturdy, double-walled thermos filled with piping hot, non-caffeinated liquid.

Make sure the bottle is insulated to keep it from freezing. If you have a hydration pack, those should be insulated as well.
