Frequently Asked Questions

“What is a Homesteading?”

A Pioneer by definition is someone who is first to explore a new area.

An American Pioneer is someone who migrated west in hopes of a better future in the beautiful unsettled land of America circa 18th and 19th century.

The Homesteading website is written for those who are pioneering their own future on their own homestead, getting back to their roots, and learning to live a self-sufficient life in present times. This could be as complex as building your own house, or as simple as learning to recycle your water and repurpose your resources. These Pioneer’s are also known as homesteaders.

“What is Homesteading?”

Homesteading is defined as “settling a homestead.” Wow, thanks Merrium Webster, that was so helpful – NOT.

OUR DEFINITION of homesteading is defined as “living a self-sufficient life.”

Homesteading is a lifestyle of making and growing, instead of just buying.  Homesteading is like getting back to your roots, the old Pioneer way.

There are different styles of homesteading, like urban homesteading, and off-the-grid homesteading. Learn more here.

“Who writes the articles on Homesteading?”

Hi, I’m Riley E. Carlson, I’m a homesteader and this is my blog. I have been homesteading my whole life, and now occupy a few acres of land up in Vermont where I grow the prettiest vegetables and the most vibrant flowers you ever did see. I live alone at the moment, but am often visited by my darling grandkids. A true lady never tells her age, but I promise I am still very young at heart. 🙂 Read my About-Me here.

Check out my advice column: Hey Riley! for quality homesteading tips, tricks, tales, and questions answered!
